The Indigenous Department actively identifies and nurtures talented Indigenous Australians and provides funding opportunities for them to participate in the film, television and interactive media production industry.
The department aims to fund projects that display bold, distinctive authorial voices that are diverse and culturally engaging. The department also takes a proactive role in shaping and influencing the policy environment for issues affecting Indigenous screen content creators.
Head of Indigenous – Penny Smallacombe
Penny is a member of the Maramanindji people from the Northern Territory. She has completed a cadetship with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and has a Master of Arts (Documentary Producing) degree from the Australian Film Television and Radio School. She worked as Producer/Director with the Indigenous Programs Unit in the ABC, and produced the ABC’s highly successful Yarning Up series 1 and 2. Penny was also a part of the Screen Australia Indigenous Department’s Producers Initiative in 2011. She produced a series of shorts called The Forgotten Ones in 2010, directed by prisoners from the Northern Territory, and most recently has been working as a Senior Programmer for NITV, National Indigenous Television, a division of SBS.
