Number of businesses, total income, employment and wages and salary expenses in the film exhibition industry by state, 1993/94, 1996/97, 1999/00


No. businesses

Between 1996/97 and 1999/00, the largest decline in the number of businesses was in Victoria (by 9), followed by South Australia (by 8). The number of businesses also fell in Queensland (by 4), Western Australia (by 3) and Tasmania (by 1). Over the same period the number of businesses in NSW rose by 6 to 67.

Employment

Employment rose in all states between June 1997 and June 2000, as it did between June 1994 and June 1997. The largest increase in the number of people employed was in NSW (an increase of 623) followed by Victoria (an increase of 547) and Queensland (an increase of 203).

Wages and salaries

Wages and salary expenses rose in most states between 1996/97 and 1999/00, with the exception of Western Australia and the ACT. The largest increase was in Victoria where costs rose $11.2 million. Whilst NSW had the largest increase in the number of people employed (76 more than Victoria), its wages and salary expenses rose only slightly (increase of $2.7 million).
