about the data

These statistics are based on Screen Australia’s analysis of the producer, director and writer credits of:

  • Australian feature films that began shooting between July 1970 and June 2018, and
  • Australian documentaries that began shooting between July 1988 and June 2018.

Individuals can have dual roles, for example one person may be counted in both the director and writer numbers. For this reason figures should not be added together to get a total number of people with key credits.

Feature films are defined as films made for cinema release which are 60 minutes or longer. Feature-length documentaries are classified under ‘Documentary’. Screen Australia’s definition of documentary is in line with that of the Australian Content Standard, ie “a program that is a creative treatment of actuality other than a news or current affairs, sports coverage, magazine, infotainment, or light entertainment program”. See Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) website. Includes one-off titles and series.

Co-productions are included but foreign films made by Australians are not. The data is drawn from Screen Australia’s production database.
