Advertising revenues, populations and operators of commercial television services in metropolitan and aggregated regional markets, 1999/00–2005/06

In total, there were 23 separate commercial television markets in Australia in 2005/06, and 54 individual commercial television stations as of June 2006.

The five metropolitan markets account for a disproportionate share of television advertising revenues. For example, although those five markets accounted for only 64 per cent of the total national population, during 2005/06 they attracted 77 per cent of all television advertising revenues. Consequently, television advertising revenues per capita in metropolitan markets in aggregate were almost double those generated in the regional markets in aggregate.
