Units and value of video product (DVD, Blu-ray and VHS) sold, 1998–2009

Next update April 2011

After an increase of 6 per cent in 2008, video sales growth softened in 2009, rising by just 1 per cent to $1,318.6 million. For the first time on record, DVD sales fell in both value and units; however, this was offset by Blu-ray sales which more than doubled over the last year. The only other significant fall in the last decade occurred in 2005, coinciding with the phasing out of VHS.

Due to very low demand for VHS titles (less than 1 per cent of total units sold in 2007), VHS sales are no longer taken into account. The emerging high-definition Blu-ray format has been included for the first time in 2008, and accounted for around 2 per cent of total value and 1 per cent of units sold.
