Interview with Berlinale’s Dieter Kosslick

Dieter Kosslick, director of the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale), visited Australia in September 2009 as part of an international itinerary. Dieter has been responsible for the creative direction and management of Berlinale, one of the world’s leading film festivals, since 2001.

The Sydney Morning Herald’s film journalist, Garry Maddox, interviewed Dieter by phone during his visit. They discussed Berlinale, the film festival’s sections and what Australian filmmakers should consider about Berlinale as they plan their festival entries.

About Berlinale

Every year more than 19,000 film professionals, including 4,000 journalists, from 120 countries are accredited for the Berlin International Film Festival. With more than 200,000 tickets sold, Berlinale is not only a film industry meeting place it also enjoys one of  the largest audiences of any film festival in the world. For two weeks, art, glamour, parties and business meet at this leading festival.

The European Film Market (EFM) runs for nine days as part of Berlinale. As the first major film market of the year it is a magnet for international industry professionals, and is seen as a barometer for the upcoming year in film.

The 30 October deadline for feature film entries has now passed. The deadline for short film entries is 16 November 2009.

The Berlin International Film Festival will run 11–21 February 2010.
