Screen Australia has announced production investment in six feature films, five adult television drama projects, a children’s television series and a documentary series. The investment of almost $18 million in 13 projects will trigger production worth over $85 million.
At an address at the Melbourne International Film Festival’s 37°South Market this evening Screen Australia’s Chief Executive Ruth Harley said, “I’m thrilled to announce a compelling slate of quality screen productions that promise to engage audiences of all ages and tastes.
“Three of the new features hail from Victoria including director Greg McLean’s film Wolf Creek 2 which will once again bring horror, action and suspense to the Outback, as well as the directorial debuts of Boyd Hicklin with the comedy Bro-mance Save Your Legs and David Pulbrook’s political drama Last Dance.”
“We also have Jungle, a new high-budget action/adventure from the talented Spierig brothers. This film is an exciting project both creatively and commercially, with an incredibly strong directing and producing team,” said Dr Harley.
Jungle (p: Chris Brown, Emile Sherman, Iain Canning, Dana Lustig, w: Justin Monjo, Peter Spierig, Michael Spierig, d: Peter Spierig, Michael Spierig) is based on the true story of young Australian Yossi Ghinsberg who gets lost in the Bolivian Jungle.
“Australia is making some of the most innovative and original television in the world. The bar has unquestionably been raised. Among the new projects approved, I’m really proud to announce the groundbreaking ABC Indigenous series Redfern Now,” said Dr Harley. “This drama will take audiences into the households of contemporary inner-city black families and give them a glimpse into a unique Australian microculture.”
Redfern Now (p: Darren Dale, Miranda Dear, w: Jon Bell, Michelle Blanchard, Danielle MacLean, Steven McGregor, Adrian Wills) is the first drama series to be written, directed and produced by Indigenous Australians. Jimmy McGovern, internationally acclaimed creator and writer of The Street, Cracker and The Lakes, collaborated with the Redfern Now team on the development of the series.
Some of the other adult television drama projects approved include The Bikie Wars: Brothers in Arms (co-p: Louisa Kors, Peter Andrikidis, ep: Des Monaghan, Greg Haddrick, Rick Maier, sp: Roger Simpson, w: Roger Simpson, Jo Martino, Greg Haddrick, d: Peter Andrikidis), a six-part series for Network Ten set at the time of the Milperra Bikie Massacre and Jack Irish (p: Ian Collie, w: Andrew Knight, Matt Cameron, d: Jeffrey Walker), a two-part ABC mini-series which brings the Peter Temple crime novels to life.
The new children’s television series to be approved is producer Jonathan M Shiff’s Mako – Island of Secrets (w: Sam Carroll, Anthony Morris, Chris Roache, d: Evan Clarry), a
26-part live action drama for Network Ten.
Storm Surfers 3D,a feature documentary set to immerse viewers in the dangerous world of big wave surfing, was also approved along with the four-part ABC documentary series Great Southern Land (p: Steve Bibb, w: Michael Cordell, d: Ivan O’Mahoney) which will give viewers a never-before filmed experience of Australia from the air.
