Amiel Courtin-Wilson’s feature film Hail has been selected for the longest running A-list film festival in the world, the 68th Venice International Film Festival.
Hail screens in Venice’s Orizzonti section, which has a focus on ‘new and redefining world cinema’. Hail is one of only a handful of Australian feature films to be selected for Venice over the last decade. Rolf de Heer’s The Tracker was selected in 2002 and Clara Law’s feature documentary Letters to Ali in 2004.
Amiel Courtin-Wilson, who wrote and directed the film, will attend the festival with his producing partner, Michael Cody, and the film’s lead actor, Daniel Jones.
On hearing the news of being selected, Amiel Courtin-Wilson said, “It is truly humbling to be recognised and placed on the world stage of cinema in competition at the oldest film festival in the world – especially considering the festival’s relationship with past luminaries such as John Cassavetes, Mike Leigh and Robert Altman.”
Screen Australia’s Head of Marketing Kathleen Drumm said, “Screen Australia has developed a close relationship with Venice, and we were pleased to be able to host one of the festival’s key selectors, Paolo Bertolin, in Sydney last month. It’s great to have such a tangible and immediate result for Australian cinema, at what is one of the elite film events of the world.”
Hail will be released in Australian cinemas later in 2011 by Madman Entertainment.
Hail was made with financial assistance from Screen Australia, Adelaide Film Festival and Film Victoria.
The Venice International Film Festival will take place 31 August – 10 September 2011.

Synopsis Dan is in love with Leanne. They were born on the same day - 19th June 1960. They eat together. They live together. They steal together. When Dan's love is suddenly ripped away from him, he is reduced to savagery. The past is not a dead thing, but may return, like a hunter, to follow us for a time.
