Screen Australia today announced $780,000 investment in the production of four one-off documentary projects from the Signature Documentary Program triggering over $1.7 million in production.

Announcing the projects at Screen Australia’s one-day Think Big Documentary Masterclass on documentaries for the big screen in Sydney, Screen Australia’s Chief Executive Ruth Harley said, “These four projects have strong creative visions and an understanding of how to express those visions, but most of all they have great stories – with the potential to resonate with audiences on screens both big and small.”

The documentary projects approved include writer/director Judy Rymer’s Charlotte’s Story, following one young Australian woman’s fight for justice following her horrific gang rape in Kenya, which will also be produced by Judy Rymer with Lois Harris.

In Bob We Trust, from writer/director Lynn-Maree Milburn, tells the story of Father Bob Maguire, a lifelong protector of the bereft and abandoned, who at the age of 77 continues to fight to be effective and helpful despite his forceful eviction from the Church. The documentary will be produced by Andrew de Groot, Richard Lowenstein and Maya Gnyp.

A troubled mother-daughter relationship played out over a lifetime reveals an epic journey from a Siberian gulag to safety in Australia and a story of survival, conflict and forgiveness in the documentary Remember Me from writer/director Sophia Turkiewicz. The film will be produced by Rod Freedman and Bob Connolly.

In Tyke: Animal Outlaw producer/directors Susan Lambert and Stefan Moore will tell the story of a circus elephant’s rampage that shook a city and raised fundamental questions about our connection to other species. The documentary will be co-produced by Megan McMurchy.

The Signature Program provides production funding for projects that are bold in form and content. The stories can be local or international but they must have an Australian team with a strong vision. This program is unique in that it doesn’t require a broadcaster attachment.
