Six Hot Shot teams get their short films greenlit

Six filmmaking teams have been selected for Screen Australia’s short film program, Hot Shots, and will each receive $70,000 to make a film of up to 8 minutes in length.

After a massive response and a highly competitive selection process, the size of the inaugural program was doubled to fund six films instead of three, reflecting the strength of talent and projects.

The successful projects are a diverse mix of conceptual and narrative shorts, and will be a showcase of strong and surprising storytelling – each one in its own way innovative, distinctive and bold.

The successful teams and projects are:

  • Reg Makes Contact, a touching story of ‘alien abduction’ and Alzheimer’s, from producer Jiao Chen, director Corrie Chen and writer Andrew Slattery
  • God’s Waiting Room, a comic glance at old age with a twist, from producer Jim Wright, director Rebecca Peniston-Bird and writer Beth King
  • Ari, a comedy in which a high school geek earns the respect of his peers, from producer Annmaree Bell and writer-director Alex Murawski
  • Welcome Home Allen, part of an innovative and emotionally affecting triptych, from producer Ramona Telecican and writer-director Andrew Kavanagh
  • Fish, a whimsical take on one man’s discovery of joy, from producer Rita Walsh and writer-director Billie Pleffer
  • Sweat, the story of two farmers and their very different regard for the land, from producer Robbie McEwan and writer-director Rodd Rathjen.

Screen Australia’s CEO, Graeme Mason, said, “The number and calibre of applications for this first Hot Shots program is a testament to the vibrancy of the emerging filmmaking sector.

“This group all display a vision and ambition that is exactly what Hot Shots was established to support. We are delighted to assist these filmmakers on their career journey and we look forward to witnessing the fruits of their labours.”
