THE FRENCH CONNECTION follows the key Aboriginal artists as they prepare their works to be featured in this new museum. It explores the interesting challenges in translating the works from their remote Australian roots into a form that could be incorporated into a contemporary building in a major city on the other side of the world. Violet West and Rita Wright tell their stories of being stolen and forced to work as domestic servants. Rita to this day cannot sleep alone without one of her grandchildren in the bed for fear of a visit at night, whilst Violet recounts how being locked in a morgue as punishment and belted with sticks makes her a fearless woman even now at the age of 82, where both women were still then expected to work as domestic servants with little to no pay. SERVANT OR SLAVE? is a historical account of Australian history, where the colony benefited from a slave trade under the guise of protecting the Aboriginal people.
