Belinda Wardlaw Jones is one of the few women in Australia to be born with a rare form of muscular dystrophy, an incurable muscle-wasting disease which can drastically reduce life expectancy. Despite her condition and against the advice of many, she and her husband Andrew decide to have a child. Belinda defends her decision to proceed with this pregnancy, believing it to be her right to become a mother, whatever the medical risks and the ultimate social costs may be.

CHINA DOLLS is a stylish and moving portrayal of gay Asian-Australians and their often difficult journeys to self-acceptance. In the gay scene, the young and beautiful possess the greatest social power. But what is considered desirable is also influenced by race. From Calvin Klein ads to gay erotica, the dominant image is Caucasian. Asian men are either invisible, or portrayed as soft or 'feminine'. CHINA DOLLS probes the uncomfortable reality of racial stereotyping and discrimination in the gay world through interviews with Asian men who talk frankly, and often humorously, of their experiences of living within a 'double minority'.

THE DIPLOMAT follows East Timorese freedom fighter and Nobel Peace Prize winner Jose Ramos Horta and his campaign to secure independence for his country, a former Portuguese colony invaded by Indonesia in 1975. This timely film documents an epic struggle over 18 months, from just before Suharto's fall to Horta's triumphant return to East Timor after 24 years in exile. The film explains a common problem of menstruating women, endometriosis. Lack of knowledge of this condition has meant that it has frequently remained undiagnosed by doctors for long periods of time. Lack of treatment oftern results in acute chronic pain and infertility. Women sufferers, doctors and alternative health practitioners all contribute to a comprehensive discussion on what 'Endo' is: its symptoms, the available options for treatment and its psychological effects. The importance of understanding from friends and family and the positive role of support groups in providing information and reassurance are highlighted. This program dispels the myths about endometriosis and offers positive suggestions for coping effectively with this condition.

In the 1970s in Australia's Western Desert, a teacher named Geoff Bardon helped start one of the most significant art movements of the 20th century. Working with the Aboriginal community at Papunya, he encouraged the people to paint their traditional dot designs using Western materials. In defiance of white authorities, Bardon also encouraged the artists to value their work commercially as well as spiritually, believing that by selling paintings the people could become independent of welfare as well as bring Indigenous art to the attention of the wider community. This is his story.

Twenty-five year-old Christie is determined - this time - to succeed on the outside. A reformed heroin addict, she relies heavily on the emotional support of her partner Paul. Together they hope to win back her nine-year-old son Damien, who has always lived with Paul's' parents.

The film's driving force is the women's talk; their funny stories, frank disclosures, erotic secrets and painful confessions create an intimate and playful commentary on contemporary relationships and lifestyles in the 1990s.
