The Screen Guide

THE DIPLOMAT follows East Timorese freedom fighter and Nobel Peace Prize winner Jose Ramos Horta and his campaign to secure independence for his country, a former Portuguese colony invaded by Indonesia in 1975. This timely film documents an epic struggle over 18 months, from just before Suharto's fall to Horta's triumphant return to East Timor after 24 years in exile. All this unfolds against a backdrop of the ballot to determine the country's future and the carnage that followed the vote. (55 min version also available).
