Groundbreaking First Nations Screen Business Accelerator launched through national partnership

kellie.adcock@screenaustralia.gov.au · 01/07/2026 ·

A landmark collaboration between Indigenous Business Australia (IBA), Screen Australia and No Coincidence Media, will deliver a newly designed First Nations Screen Business Accelerator supported by Screen Canberra, Screen NSW, Screen Queensland, Screen Tasmania, Screen Territory, Screenwest, South Australian Film Corporation and VicScreen.

This marks the first time these key organisations have come together to invest in a coordinated, national approach to elevate First Nations screen businesses.

The First Nations Screen Business Accelerator is a bold new initiative designed to support emerging and mid-career Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander producers to elevate their projects and production companies to the next level.

The business accelerator will provide participants with access to industry-leading mentorship, and targeted business development support delivered through a culturally informed approach that reflects Indigenous ways of doing business within the realities of the contemporary screen industry.

This collaboration represents a significant step forward in strengthening the First Nations screen ecosystem by aligning investment, expertise and opportunity across federal and state levels, through an industry-led, nationally coordinated approach.

The business accelerator will focus on building sustainable creative businesses and equipping participants with the skills, frameworks and support to scale their work for both national and international markets. Participants may benefit from pathways to finance and market opportunities, as well as tailored support through IBA.

IBA has a history of successful Accelerator programs with both a general business and tourism focus. They note this new initiative reflects a shared commitment to economic empowerment through storytelling:

“This partnership recognises that First Nations producers are not only powerful storytellers, but entrepreneurs and business leaders. By supporting their business growth, we are strengthening the foundations of a more resilient and sustainable First Nations screen sector,” said Sean Armistead, Deputy CEO, IBA.

Screen Australia Director of First Nations Strategy Rachel Perkins said, “To succeed in the screen industry, creativity needs to be matched with strong business foundations. Backed by national and state partners, this initiative creates that support – ensuring the next generation of Indigenous production companies have the business scaffolding to build sustainable careers and bring their stories to the screen.”

No Coincidence Media, which will play a key role in designing and delivering the program, emphasised the importance of First Nations-led design:

“No Coincidence Media is proud to lead the First Nations Screen Business Accelerator, drawing on our experience in the industry and our commitment to a First Nations-led lens as our foundation.”

“This program responds to a clear need in the sector supporting the next generation of producers to build sustainable businesses, strengthen their business acumen, and ensure our stories continue to be told our way,” said Mitch Stanley, Producer, No Coincidence Media.

Applications now open. Please visit: www.iba.gov.au/First-Nations-Screen-Business-Accelerator.

Screen Australia releases the Private Investment Toolkit to strengthen screen industry financing pathways

kellie.adcock@screenaustralia.gov.au · 29/06/2026 ·

Screen Australia has today released the Private Investment Toolkit, a free interactive digital platform, built by and for the sector, designed to help producers to unlock private investment opportunities for screen projects and support a deeper shift towards a more sustainable, market-led sector.

Commissioned by Screen Australia and developed in consultation with a taskforce of experts across finance, tax, investment, philanthropy, legal, education and production, the Private Investment Toolkit delivers a set of practical, adaptable resources. These resources empower both producers and potential investors to work together with confidence, transparency, standardisation and deal readiness.

Recognising that investors come with varying motivations, including commercial return, social and cultural impact and philanthropic outcomes, the Toolkit provides tailored approaches and investment structures to align with investment intent.

Screen Australia Chief Operating Officer Grainne Brunsdon said, “The Private Investment Toolkit unlocks the true investment potential of our screen industry. By helping investors understand the opportunities and giving producers the tools to present projects and manage relationships with clarity, confidence and commercial rigour, it opens the door to more constructive dialogue around screen projects, setting the stage for more confident and successful partnerships.”

“Importantly, it also shows investors exactly where, how and why they should engage, highlighting that the screen sector can deliver influence, ownership and cultural impact as well as returns — a combination that many traditional investments simply can’t deliver.”

Producer, investor and taskforce member Deanne Weir said, “Screen Australia’s Private Investment Toolkit is an absolute gift to both producers and investors, it will help bridge the significant knowledge gaps that currently exist between those with capital and those who need it. Screen stories have fallen off the radar as an investment opportunity, but we can offer a fun and fulfilling experience to funders who believe that storytelling can both entertain and also help all of us better understand the world we live in. I hope the Toolkit will make it easier to attract and retain the new funding partners critical to the future of the Australian screen industry.”

For screen practitioners, the Toolkit creates clear pathways to private investment by providing resources and tools that:

  • Support the preparation of projects with a market-informed mindset that complements public funding with private capital.
  • Strengthen the attractiveness of screen investment through transparent, consistent and market-ready approaches to finance partnerships.
  • Guide how projects are pitched and communicated to private investors, using clear language to set value, risk, timelines and expectations.

For potential investors, the Toolkit creates clear pathways for investment by providing resources and tools that:

  • Help to understand the sector, navigate the investment process and make informed, goal-aligned decisions.
  • Support investment approaches tailored to commercial return, social and cultural impact, and philanthropic motivations.
  • Identify different ways to invest in screen projects with varying risk and return profiles.

The Private Investment Toolkit was launched under the Enrich Pillar of Screen Australia’s Corporate Plan (PDF). The pillar delivers projects that build a strong, inclusive industry by fostering screen businesses and developing talent. The Toolkit is free to use, requires no registration and is available via the Screen Australia website.

First Nations Factual Co-production Development Fund launched to elevate Indigenous storytelling in global markets

kellie.adcock@screenaustralia.gov.au · 20/05/2026 ·

Screen Australia’s First Nations Department, in partnership with Screen Canberra, Screen NSW, Screen Queensland, Screen Tasmania, Screen Territory, Screenwest, South Australian Film Corporation and VicScreen, has today opened applications for the First Nations Factual Co-production Development Fund, a new national program designed to strengthen and elevate First Nations screen businesses in international markets.

The program will support up to five First Nations businesses to expand their global experience by fostering creative exchange between countries based on the development of factual projects that explore Indigenous perspectives of cultural significance.

Successful applicants will receive a grant of $30,000 each for both the development of two factual projects with potential for international co-production or Official Co-production (created under treaty frameworks) and attendance at Canada’s TIFF: The Market.

Screen Australia Director of First Nations Strategy Rachel Perkins said, “First Nations storytellers around the world share deep cultural connections that transcend time and place, offering powerful, diverse perspectives. This program enables those perspectives to be realised on screen, creating distinctive, high-quality factual storytelling that resonates worldwide. By developing projects for the TIFF 2026 market, we’re creating a vital pathway for First Nations stories to reach global audiences.”

First Nations-owned and operated production companies led by Indigenous practitioners are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be mid-to-established career practitioners with at least two documentary screen credits or have created 60 minutes of factual content broadcast, and be available to attend TIFF: The Market (10-16 September 2026).

Applications close 5pm AEST Thursday 4 June 2026. More information regarding eligibility criteria and how to apply can be found here.

Potential applicants are also encouraged to watch the recent Official Co-production Ask Me Anything session which features information on First Nations co-productions available here.
