Share of DVD, Blu-ray and VHS retail sales value by type, 2000–2016

Movies remained the most popular type of video product in 2016, accounting for 50.1 per cent of total DVD and Blu-ray retail sales value, down from 50.4 per cent in 2015.

Live-action movie titles continue to dominate the Blu-ray format which accounts for 18.7 per cent of total retail sales and 15.7 per cent of units sold in 2016.

GfK Marketing reduced the number of category types tracked in 2008. VHS sales are no longer reported here due to very low demand for the format (less than 1 per cent of total units sold in 2007). The emerging high-definition Blu-ray format was included for the first time in 2008, and accounted for around 2 per cent of total value and 1 per cent of units sold.
