Berlin International Film Festival

Genre: All genre

Berlinale is widely regarded as one of the top three festivals for feature films in the world (alongside Cannes and Venice) with more than 329,000 tickets sold, one of the largest public film festivals in the world, and around 20,000 plus industry attendees annually.

It screens about 243 films across all genres and lengths across Competition, Berlinale Shorts, Panorama, Forum and Forum Expanded, Generation, Berlinale Special. TV Series are now incorporated into general programming. From 2025 it will have a first fiction feature competition called Perspectives with a EURO50,000 prize.

Integrated into Berlin’s structure is the European Film Market (EFM), plus the Co-production Market and Berlinale Talents. The EFM is a major annual film business market. The Festival and the EFM attract around 20,000 accredited professionals from 157 countries and 2,600 media.

Tips for Attendees

‘Having been to the EFM before, and attend some events at the Berlinale, I could see how it has a mix of the following: artistic integrity … and respect for innovative work, but also seems to have a sense of humour; good press coverage and international attention; a high glamour quotient …connection to the market (with the EFM running simultaneously and many buyers and sales agents attending …but also real audiences of regular people …, who attend in huge numbers, and give a good gauge of how the general public will respond to your film.’

‘It is EXPENSIVE to attend an A list festival, with the various requirements of the festival…as well as of course accommodation, flights and meals for you and whoever attends… it is important that you speak with your sales agent well in advance about what they will cover.’

‘… it was felt by us and our Sales Agent that it (Berlin screenings) would significantly raise the profile of our film. As it turned out, the Berlin screenings led to a number substantial sales to and invitations to other festivals… The excellent press we received from Berlin also brought significant attention to our film.’

‘I would absolutely recommend that any filmmaker should insist on seeing 5 mins of his/her DCP screened at least 2 days prior to the premiere to avoid any disasters on the night. I insisted on seeing a few minutes with the new German subtitles, which I had not seen. As it turned out… it was immediately apparent that there had been a mistake made… It would have been a disaster if we had screened this print on the night of the premiere.’
