Cannes Film Festival

Genre: All genre

It’s the dream of many a filmmaker to walk up the red carpet and into the Palais where their film is screening in Competition to a full house. But there is more to Cannes than the feature and shorts Competition. Some films find a home in Un Certain Regard, others are launched at Critics’ Week or Directors’ Fortnight, stars of tomorrow are uncovered in La Cinef, a special section for shorts and mid-length films for emerging talent submitted by film schools, and the frenzied Cannes Market is where significant deal-making takes place. Each year the festival presents the ‘Official Selection’ (a Competition for features and shorts, Un Certain Regard, Special Screenings and La Cinef) and two ‘Non Official Selections’ (Critics’ Week and Directors’ Fortnight).

Sections

Official Sections

  • In Competition Features
  • Out of Competition
  • Un Certain Regard
  • In Competition Shorts
  • La Cinef
  • Cannes Classics
  • Special Screenings
  • And from 2024, Immersive Competition

Non-Official Sections*

  • Critics’ Week (Semaine de la Critique) Dedicated to discovering new directors. Each year they offer opportunities to about 20 filmmakers. Ten feature films are selected (seven in Cannes Competition) and 10 shorts.
  • Directors’ Fortnight (La Quinzaine des Cineastes) An independent section held parallel to the Cannes Film Festival, Directors’ Fortnight is open to the expression of individual talent and original directorial style. It screens a program of features, shorts and documentaries.

* These non-official sections are independent of the Cannes Film Festival. They are in charge of their own respective selections ie apply to each separately.

Tips for Attendees

‘Postcards were not very successful. There were few appropriate places to leave them.’

‘There is definitely an importance placed on feature films over short films.’

‘The Screen Australia office put on some incredibly beneficial events. The lunch with festival directors was an amazing opportunity to meet valuable contacts for future festival submissions, and the Australian drinks were a great opportunity to meet other Australian filmmakers.’
