Venice International Film Festival

Genre: All genre

Regarded as one of the top three feature film festivals in the world (alongside Cannes and Berlin) and one of the oldest (first time in 1932) Venice is certainly one of the most prestigious film festivals, presenting world-class films with highly anticipated red carpet guests from Hollywood, Europe and around the world, often timed for Oscar’s campaigns. It has very strict entry conditions, with most sections requiring world premiere status.

Sections

The Official Selection

  • Venezia 80 (an international competition comprising a maximum of 21 feature films, presented as world premieres)
  • Out of Competition (a maximum of 20 films including works from established as well as newer filmmakers. It includes a midnight time slot. All films must be world premieres)
  • Orizzonti (an international competition for 19 films. This section is often where new filmmakers or innovative works are showcased. It also includes a short film competition for films of up to 20 minutes duration. All films must be world premieres).
  • Orizzonto Extra (a non-competitive section but eligible for an Audience Award of 10 works for varying genres, lengths and target, but must be longer than 60 minutes. May include TV series, genre movies, experimental).
  • Venice Classics (up to 18 titles, restorations of classic films).
  • Venice Immersive (up to 10 Immersive Projects in VR as world or international premieres. Can be works of any length).

Venice Production Bridge, a film market, runs alongside the festival.

Independent and parallel sections (separate sections with their own regulations):

  • SIC International Critics’ Week (up to nine debut films organised by the National Syndicate of Italian Film Critics SNCCI)
  • Venice Days (up to 12 films presented by the Italian filmmakers associatio ANAC).

Venice Film Market:

  • Taking place at the same time as the festival.
