Instagram First Nations Creators Program

Instagram are partnering with Screen Australia’s First Nations Department to pilot the First Nations Creators Program.

The First Nations Creators Program aims to foster Indigenous talent, amplify their voices online and help create long term career prospects for First Nations creators in social media and digital content creation.  

Up to fifteen emerging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander digital creators will be selected to take part in a program over 4-6 months, which provides training, mentoring, career connections and content funding.

This pilot program will be administered and supported by Screen Australia’s First Nations and Online Production departments. 

Please note that Partner and Facebook (directly and/or through a third party) may collect personally identifiable information to administer the Program, process applications, perform certain compliance checks and sanctions screenings.

Who can apply?

To be eligible for Instagram and Screen Australia funding under this program, applicants must:

  • identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
  • be over 18 years old
  • be an Australian citizen or permanent resident. Applicant companies must be incorporated and carrying on business in Australia
  • have an Instagram account and great experience in social media or digital content creation
  • be able to join the program for a 4-6 month period 
  • meet the general eligibility requirements set out in Screen Australia’s Terms of Trade
  • meet Facebook's standard grant recipient safety and security checks.


Successful applicants will enter the 4- 6 month program, consisting of the following: 

  • travel and accommodation to attend a workshop in one of the capital cities in Australia
  • formal online training / workshops 
  • inspiration sessions run by industry thought leaders and creators 
  • practical work 
  • group feedback / discussions as required
  • monthly check in with Instagram and Screen Australia representatives (1 hr a month)
  • creator mentors – participants partner with a creator working in the area of interest (1-2 hrs a month)
  • travel to Sydney to attend up to two in-person training days and program events 
  • content funding pitch and production.

Additional support:

  • initial support payment of $1,500 to help participants cover any travel or tech costs to be a part of the program
  • introductions to industry contacts including creators, agents/management teams 
  • successful candidates will also receive production funding of $7,600 to help them create an IGTV or Reels project for their Instagram account
  • upon completion of the program, creators will be assigned an Instagram Partner Manager to assist with their account needs, provide on-going support and platform opportunities.

When and how can applications be made?

Applications close 5pm AEST 17th June 2021 and can be made via the application portal.  

What needs to be included in the application? 

  • fully completed application form including contact details and applicant eligibility
  • social account details (account name, followers etc) – Instagram, Facebook Page, TikTok, You Tube
  • what type of creator you are, i.e. comedy, beauty, advocate, lifestyle?
  • what inspires your content creation’?
  • your goals for your social media presence?
  • a one-minute downloadable video sharing a bit about yourself, your Instagram account and how you connect with communities on Instagram.

How are applications assessed? 

Once we receive your application, a member of our team will review to ensure it’s complete and meets all eligibility requirements. They’ll contact you with any questions, or requests for more information. Complete and eligible applications will be reviewed by Screen Australia and Instagram executives, and external industry specialists as required.

Assessment Criteria

Screen Australia and Instagram will take the following equally weighted criteria into account when considering applications for First Nations Creators Program:

  • your social media account metrics including engagement rate, posting frequency, video performance and growth rate
  • the creativity of the content shared on your social media accounts
  • the ability to share your unique point of view and authenticity on social media accounts
  • the written answers and material sent in with your submission.

Applicants will be advised of the outcome by 27 July 2021.  

Terms of funding

If your application is successful, the following key terms and conditions will apply: 

  • Screen Australia funding is provided as a grant. See Screen Australia’s Terms of Trade for more detail
  • meet Facebook's partner safety and security checks including standard police check
  • agree to the terms of Facebook’s Marketing Release Form for Individuals.
  • obligation to supply any information reasonably requested by SA or Facebook so they can perform necessary due diligence and background checks.
  • noting that a grant recipient will be required to provide status reports summarizing the status of the grant recipient’s project, timeline and spending, upon SA’s reasonable request.
  • a statement that each piece of content funded as part this Program (“Funded Content”) will be posted first to Facebook and Instagram and will remain exclusive to Facebook and Instagram for one (1) month from the date that each Funded Content item is posted (“Exclusivity Period”). During the Exclusivity Period, grant recipients will not directly or indirectly make available the Funded Content on any product, platform, media or service other than Facebook and Instagram, unless otherwise approved by Facebook.
  •  a statement that ‘The grant may not be used, directly or indirectly, in any manner that would constitute bribery or an illegal kickback, illegal campaigning to political parties/candidates or would otherwise violate anti-corruption regulations and other applicable laws. The grant will not be used by the recipient in any event to create or fund content on behalf of or promoting a candidate for public office, a political figure, a political party, a political action committee, any other content that would be considered regulated political advertising, or advocate for the outcome of an election to public office.’
