Subscription Video on Demand services
The ACMA publishes data on Australian content expenditure by subscription video on demand (SVOD) services. SVOD servicesAmazon Prime Video, Disney+, Netflix and Stan have reported each financial year since 2019/20, and Paramount+ commenced reporting in 2021/22. The SVOD reports compiled by the ACMA can be found here.
In November 2025, the Australian Government passed laws to set up an Australian content requirement on major SVODs with at least 1 million Australian subscribers. Effective from 1 January 2026, SVOD services in Australia must invest at least 10% of their total program expenditure in Australia, or 7.5% of their gross Australian revenue, on new Australian commissions or first-release acquisitions. The ACMA is responsible for overseeing compliance with the SVOD Australian content requirements.
Digital Games
In Australia, digital games content is primarily regulated through the National Classification Scheme (NCS), which is a cooperative arrangement between the Australian federal, state and territory governments. Under the NCS, digital games must be classified by the Classification Board, an independent government body, before they are made publicly available. Digital games are classified against six classifiable elements and are assigned classifications ranging from G (General) to RC (Refused Classification). The Classification Board is further authorised to assign specific consumer advice that must be displayed with the game’s classification category.
Additionally, online content in Australia is regulated under the Online Safety Act 2021, which encompasses online digital games behaviours and environments. The ACMA and eSafety Commissioner also oversee digital games regulation, particularly with regard to child protection and safe online environments.
