This page explores the number of Australian General Subscription TV and SVOD titles produced, hours, budgets, spend and average cost per hour. General subscription TV and SVOD drama is drama made for family and adult audiences first released on either subscription TV and related platforms — Foxtel, Foxtel Now, Foxtel Go and other Foxtel services — or subscription VOD platforms such as Amazon Prime, Binge, Disney+, Netflix, Paramount+ and Stan. It does not include children’s drama, which is reported separately.

A range of SVOD services has launched in Australia offering drama. Stan, now fully-owned by Nine Entertainment, opened in 2015 and Netflix launched in Australia later that year, followed by Amazon Prime in 2016. Disney+ and Apple TV+ launched in Australia in 2019 and Foxtel launched its SVOD service, Binge, in 2020. Paramount+ launched in 2021: it replaced the former 10 All Access service and is operated by Paramount Global, owners of the 10 Network.

In 2023/24, expenditure on Australian general subscription TV and SVOD drama was up by 17%, and 52% above the 5-year average. Numbers of titles and hours were also up, 29% and 17% respectively, and were also above the 5-year average – 39% and 42% respectively. Average cost-per-hour continued to increase (2% above last year), and was 12% above the 5-year average.
