Berlin International Film Festival open for applications

Eligible Australian titles can apply for Berlinale 2021.

In this year of closed borders due to COVID-19 restrictions, Screen Australia will unfortunately not be hosting a selector from the Berlinale (aka Berlin International Film Festival) to preselect new Australian films. However, the festival has asked Screen Australia to provide a list of eligible new features and shorts intending to be submitted to help them track those titles through the submission process.

Berlinale (11-20 Feb 2021) is one of the top film festivals in the world, annually selling 300,000 plus cinema tickets and screening more than 300 films. For its next edition the festival is intending to take place as a physical event, following applicable rules and regulations to help ensure health and safety for all participants. The accompanying European Film Market is planned to be a hybrid event which will take place physically and virtually in 2021. In 2020 Australian titles that premiered at the festival included H is for Happiness (Special Mention Crystal Bear for Best Film), High Ground, Stateless, and Mystery Road series 2, and four short films.

If you have an eligible feature film or short film, drama or documentary that you are intending to submit to Berlinale 2021 for its world or international premiere please contact Dale Fairbairn, Manager, Festivals and Industry Partnerships at Screen Australia by COB Wednesday 7 October – [email protected].

Berlinale’s eligibility rules and submission instructions are available here

Please note:

  • There will not be a Generation Shorts program in 2021.
  • Filmmakers/sales agents must officially submit films to the festival following the festival’s guidelines. Screen Australia will not be submitting films.
  • The festival’s entry deadlines are:
  • 3 November 2020 for feature-length films, and
  • 17 November 2020 for short films.
