All Media Program recipients announced

Screen Australia today announced the first 12 projects of the inaugural round of the All Media Program incorporating production investment through the All Media Production strand and development support through the Digital Ignition strand.

The All Media Program supports narrative content in both linear and non-linear forms that pushes the envelope of creative storytelling. Practitioners are provided with opportunities to take risks, extend their skills and explore new storytelling tools and platforms.

“There are some terrific projects in the mix, representing the broad range of genres and types that the All Media Program hoped to encourage,” said Ruth Harley, CEO, Screen Australia. “We have new talent through to established players collaborating and telling stories through interactive documentary, games, web series, apps and multi-platform television.”

Seven projects were supported for All Media Production investment including an online documentary, two short form series for TV and online broadcasts, two games, an app for touch screen devices and a multi-platform comedy drama including a six-part television series.

The projects approved include Wonderland, an online documentary for SBS that teams three emerging filmmakers with veteran documentary filmmaker Alex West of Renegade and digital agency Chocolate Liberation Front (Asylum: Exit Australia). The documentary explores the hard-hitting story of the sudden growth and subsequent implosion of Australia’s Indian student industry.

Australian Encounters is an animated short form history series for ABC TV from Suitcase Murphy (Beyond the Backyard) and experienced executive producer Sue Maslin. Micro Nation is a short comedy series for Network Ten set on the seceded island nation of Pullamawang to be produced by Linda Ujuk at Freehand, with rising director/head writer Andrew Garrick and co-written by the young Australian comedy collective, Boomball.

An online game and short animation series for ABC, Peledais from visionary artists the Jurevicius brothers (Figaro Pho, Scary Girl), collaborating with game developer Fiasco; MacGuffin’s Curse is a story-driven puzzle game for digital download from Andrew Goulding and Ben Kosmina of Brawsome, the developers behind the award-winning game Jolly Rover.

The Strange Calls is a multi-platform comedy drama including a six-part TV series for ABC2 set to launch young writer/director Daley Pearson, previously known for his low-budget feature $quid, and teaming him with producers Hoodlum (Slide) who continue their move into original programming. Also supported through the All Media Production program is an app for touch screen devices based on the much-loved preschool property Guess How Much I Love You from animation house SLR (Gasp!, Deadly!) in collaboration with digital agency The Farm.

Among the five projects supported for development through Digital Ignition is Double Happy Versus the Infinite Sadness, a story-driven adventure game and full transmedia entertainment property from digital agency Monkeystack. Neptune’s Pride, an online strategy game for multiple players from developer Iron Helmet was also supported. The Hive is a native transmedia project about the hidden codes of cooperation, which includes a serious game and documentary, originated by writer/director Annamaria Talas (How Kevin Bacon Cured Cancer, The Hobbit Enigma), produced by Smith & Nasht (Dick Smith’s Population Puzzle), working with digital outfit Moonshine Agency and US serious games guru Edward Castronova.

The Dirtgirlworld Interactive Garden App for touch screen devices will be produced by Cate McQuillen of Mememe, co-creator of the hugely successful animated TV series has received development support. Cate will work with digital outfit Tequila and will use augmented reality to allow kids to experience nature like never before.

Also to receive development support through Digital Ignition is Quick Quest, a fantasy action role playing game (RPG) for touch screen devices from Defiant Development.

The inaugural round of the All Media Program was highly competitive with 80 applications received comprising of 24 applications for All Media Production and 56 for Digital Ignition.

The second round of the All Media Production strand closes on 10 February 2012 and the Digital Ignition strand closes on 17 February 2012.
