Dead Europe joins the Australian line-up at Toronto

Director Tony Krawitz’s Dead Europe was announced overnight to join the exciting line-up of Australian films screening at the Toronto International Film Festival next month.

Dead Europe was produced by the Oscar®-winning duo Emile Sherman and Iain Canning (The King's Speech, Shame) and Liz Watts (Animal Kingdom, Lore). A tense and moody mystery, the film follows Isaac (Ewen Leslie in a breakthrough performance), a late-20s Greek Australian who spirals out of control when forced to confront his family's cursed legacy on his first trip to Europe – with the continent's haunted past and troubled present pressing in on him.

Marking the dramatic feature directorial debut of Australian filmmaker Tony Krawitz, with a screenplay by Louise Fox based on the epic novel by Christos Tsiolkas, the film also stars Marton Csokas (The Debt) and Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Road).

Dead Europe will screen in the Contemporary World Cinema program, with its international premiere on Friday 7 September.

“As with Shame last year, we are looking forward to Dead Europe stirring debate and capturing the imagination of the Toronto audience,” said Iain Canning on behalf of his fellow producers. “Tony was able to document these turbulent times as they unfolded around him, making the film a unique and real window on contemporary Europe. We are honoured to be part of the festival program.”

Tony Krawitz’s feature documentary The Tall Man screened in Toronto’s Real to Reel section at last year’s festival.

Dead Europe will join four other Australian films announced by Toronto: Lore, The Sapphires, Storm Surfers 3D and Underground. The Toronto International Film Festival takes place 6–16 September 2012.

Transmission Films will release Dead Europe in Australia this November.
