Celebrating The Sapphires and a big few months ahead for Australian films

Screen Australia Chief Executive Ruth Harley has today congratulated the filmmakers and cast of The Sapphires for a spectacular opening week.

The Sapphires has taken $3.6 million at the box office, ranking alongside Happy Feet 2, Tomorrow When the War Began, Mao’s Last Dancer and Australia, all of which broke the $3 million mark in their opening week.

“Australian audiences are loving The Sapphires and we are thrilled with its great results after just one week in release. In the next few months, a number of ambitious new commercial local films will arrive in cinemas around the country. These films feature iconic Australian figures and are designed to appeal to broad audiences. Watch out for Kath and Kimderella, Bait 3D and Mental,” Dr Harley said.

Dr Harley said that Kath and Kimderella (release date 6 September), Bait 3D (20 September) and Mental (4 October) will all be released on more than 200 prints with significant marketing campaigns.

“This is the first time in many years that Australian films will be so eagerly anticipated by audiences in cities and regional centres across the country. Screen Australia is very pleased that these films will be accessible to so many people across the cinema-going demographic and we wish them every success,” added Dr Harley.

The Sapphires proves yet again that Australians really do enjoy getting behind a great Australian story, well told.”
