Screen Australia invests in two feature films and second series of Redfern Now

Screen Australia today announced almost $5.5 million investment in two feature films from rising Australian talents and a second series of the landmark ABC television drama Redfern Now, generating over $21 million in production.

The second series of Redfern Now centres on contemporary inner-city Indigenous life and will once again, in six stand-alone episodes, tell the stories of six ordinary families whose lives are changed by a seemingly insignificant incident.

Writers from the first series, Steven McGregor, Adrian Wills and Jon Bell, and new Redfern Now writers, Wayne Blair and Leah Purcell, will be taken through an intense development process led by Jimmy McGovern, the internationally acclaimed creator and writer of The Street, Cracker and The Lakes. The series is to be produced by Darren Dale and Miranda Dear of the award-winning Indigenous production company Blackfella Films.

Redfern Now is one of several partnerships between ABC TV and Screen Australia’s Indigenous Department and I’m very proud of the work we’re achieving together,” said Screen Australia’s Chief Executive Ruth Harley. “This is compelling television drama at its very best, showcasing extraordinary talent both in front of and behind the camera.”

Both feature films approved for investment are directorial debuts. My Mistress is producer Leanne Tonkes and director Stephen Lance’s debut feature film about a teenager suffering from grief after his father’s suicide who seeks help from a local French S&M mistress in an attempt to reconnect with his life. The contemporary drama is written by Gerard Lee (Sweetie, All Men Are Liars, Top of the Lake) with executive producer Robyn Kershaw (Save Your Legs!, Bran Nue Dae) on board.

Son of a Gun is award-winning writer/director Julius Avery’s (Jerrycan, Yardbird) debut feature film. The film is a psychological thriller about a young man sent to prison who becomes the apprentice to public enemy number one. It is produced by Timothy White (Gettin’ Square) with co-producer Janelle Landers and executive producers Aaron L Gilbert, John Collee, Bryce Menzies and Aidan O’Bryan.

“It’s great to be able to support these two compelling projects from top emerging Australian feature directing and producing talent, who have teamed up with some of Australia’s most experienced players in the business,” said Dr Harley.

My Mistress has the potential to perform the trifecta of box office, critical success and the launch of exciting new directorial and producing careers,” said Dr Harley.

“Julius Avery’s critically acclaimed previous work demonstrates an awesome talent. Son of a Gun is an inherently Australian story which is set to deliver stylish big-screen entertainment for both the local and international market,” concluded Dr Harley.
