Two Australian features selected for Berlin’s Generation program

Australian feature film The Rocket will have its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival in February 2013 in Generation, the section devoted to children and young people. It will be joined by Indigenous feature Satellite Boy, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

The Rocket, from narrative feature helmer Kim Mordaunt and funded by Screen Australia, is the story of a Lao boy, who is thought to bring bad luck, who leads his family across war-torn Laos to the dangerous Rocket Festival.

The Rocket is also nominated for the Best First Feature award at Berlin.

Satellite Boy from first-time director Catriona McKenzie, also funded by Screen Australia, features legendary actor David Gulpilil as the grandfather of a young boy trying to save his home.

“It’s tremendous to see these cross-cultural stories of children from up-and-coming Australian talent, reaching out to international audiences,” said Screen Australia’s Head of Marketing Kathleen Drumm.

Both films will screen in competition in the Generation Kplus competition.

The Berlin International Film Festival will take place 7–17 February 2013.
