Synopsis
The crisis on Australia's farmland is about ordinary families, not economics or politics. Government figures state that 53 percent of farm families in the Australian wheat belt are at risk of bankruptcy, and behind those statistics there are thousands of stories of anger, humiliation and occasional tragedy. This story begins in October 1986, on the wheat farm of Ron and Helen Miles, at Condobolin in the very centre of New South Wales. By December it is clear that their crop has failed, and the bank has told them to sell the farm. There are no buyers. GOING BROKE charts the heart-breaking process of going broke on the land, and its human cost.
