ISLAND HOME COUNTRY is a poetic cine-essay about Australia’s colonised history and how it impacts on the present. The filmmaker, a descendant of convicts transported in 1788, goes on a journey to understand the violent history of colonial Tasmania repressed during her 1950s childhood there. Filming with her white family, newcomer Australians and Tasmanian Aboriginal community members, she explores her personal responsibility to the First Australians and to Country. ISLAND HOME COUNTRY offers insights into how different individuals reckon with the traumatic legacies of colonialism. The film is a thoughtful contribution to issues and challenges facing ‘Post Apology’ Australia.
