No Forest, No Future

The effect of the Government of Thailand's drive for export earnings is startlingly visible in Trang Province, on the South-West coast. The mangrove forests, where the fishing villagers live, are a rich natural resource, but are being destroyed by commercial exploitation for charcoal, shrimp farming and tourist development: traditional fishing grounds have been taken over by large commercial operators who net indiscriminately for short-term gains.
