Synopsis
Midnight, 1 June 1942, three Japanese midget submarines slip into Sydney Harbour and launch a surprise attack on the city’s defences. In the confusion that followed, 21 Australians and six Japanese lost their lives. If you’re a Sydneysider, you’ve probably heard something of this story before. It’s doubtful you’ll have heard the voices of the survivors, witnesses, or relatives of those who died — Australian and Japanese. No-one in the last 62 years has filmed or presented the Japanese perspective of this infamous attack. Moving back and forth in time, using old and new footage, interviews past and present, SYDNEY AT WAR tracks the events of that night and its aftermath.
