Matilda Country
Every two years, the small town of Winton in central Queensland holds a festival which is renowned throughout the bush. But few realise that the festival was born out of desperate attempts to keep the town from dying, after a drought had driven out both graziers and shopkeepers. A few people put their heads together and decided to try for the tourist dollar - and the festival saved the town that was the birthplace of Australian unionism, our national airline, Qantas, and our national song, 'Waltzing Matilda'.
