The Pink House
THE PINK HOUSE is an 80-minute documentary about a tenacious Madam and her determination to save the Questa Casa, the oldest working brothel in Kalgoorlie. This rough, frontier town, built on ‘gold, girls and grog’ is experiencing a seismic moral shift as it undergoes an image makeover. Of the 18 houses of ill-repute which flourished on the infamous Hay Street in the golden days, The Pink House, built circa 1904, is the last original Goldfields brothel still standing. Along with a handful of working girls, the house and its history is being kept alive by 'sex tours' run by the enterprising Madam Carmel, a gifted raconteur who regales busloads of tourists with her colourful anecdotes. But old habits die hard in this wild west town and the burgeoning ads for cheap Asian women in the local paper suggest a black market sex industry is alive and well in Kalgoorlie's suburbs. THE PINK HOUSE is an intimate portrait of characters and relationships under pressure. With unprecedented access to the inner workings of an historic brothel, this rich character-filled documentary explores the complex and confronting issues surrounding the sex industry from the unique perspective of Madam Carmel and BJ, one of her most experienced ladies of the night.
