The Screen Guide

THE SECRET SIDE OF ME reminds us of what it was to be a child. It follows a group of 11 and 12-year-old children who adopt the ancient ritual of mask making as a part of a theatrical performance within the modern day context of their education at school. From behind the masks, the children find they are able to express deep and sometimes painful feelings and thoughts that would otherwise not be expressed, particularly in such a public platform. Both moving and poignant, the film captures the children's revelation of their true thoughts and feelings in a performance to their parents and friends, finding a voice in their community which is both honoured and heard.
