The Screen Guide

WHITE-WASHING retells the story of Susan Smith, the most demonised media personality of 1995. It interrupts the global media's construction of her as a monster and questions the morality of her public lynching. As a viewing experience, WHITE-WASHING aims to produce the climate of panic in which these events took place. The video uses text to disrupt the dominant culture of titillating headlines and its fast-paced tempo mimics the limited attention span of channel surfing. It's a furious and surreal look at the un/natural order, the ultimate crime, and Susan Smith, a singularly spectacular specimen of roadkill.
