Units and value of video product (DVD, Blu-ray and VHS) sold, 1998–2011

Video sales continued a downward trend through 2010 and 2011, falling 12 per cent and 25 per cent respectively. While there was an overall decline, Blu-ray sales experienced 40 per cent growth from $87.4 million in 2010 to $122.1 million in 2011. DVD sales fell by 30 per cent from $1,073.1 million in 2010 to $748.6 million in 2011.

The emerging high-definition Blu-ray format was included for the first time in 2008 when it accounted for around 2 per cent of total value and 1 per cent of units sold. In 2011, Blu-ray accounted for 14 per cent of total value and 12 per cent of units sold.

Due to very low demand for VHS titles (less than 1 per cent of total units sold in 2007), VHS sales are no longer taken into account.
