The Screen Guide

Fear, shame and intimidation prevent most sexual assault victims from ever taking legal action. Stepping in to a courtroom and reliving the ordeal is just the start of it – Definitions of sexual consent in the State or Territory where the case is tried can mean the difference between guilty and not guilty. States of Consent follows the story of one woman trying to get justice against all odds. Her job as a stripper makes her the 'worst kind of victim'. Outdated laws and old-fashioned clichés still dominate this Darwin courtroom, none more so than a defence of “an honest but mistaken belief of consent”, an excuse that no longer stands in most other parts of Australia.
