DVD, VHS and Blu-ray, 2000–2017

Next update June 2019

In 2009, there was a sharp increase in the number of video releases, rising 44 per cent to 6,664 in 2009 from 4,616 in 2008. This marked the greatest number of video releases since the 2004 peak of 7,040 due, in part, to 20th Century Fox re-releasing a number of films on DVD and Blu-ray to mark the company’s 75th anniversary. Notably, the number of Blu-ray releases, at 614, was more than double the previous year.

Since the peak in 2009, the number of DVD releases has consistently dropped year on year. While Blu-ray releases have steadily increased across the same period, 2014 marked the first year to show a decline in this format.

VHS sales are no longer reported here due to very low demand for the format (less than 1 per cent of total units sold in 2007). The emerging high-definition Blu-ray format was included for the first time in 2008, and has grown from less than 1 per cent of all titles released annually to approximately 41 per cent.
