Number of Australian and overseas videos (DVD and VHS) classified by country of origin, 1984–1999/00

The video classification scheme, at first voluntary, became compulsory in 1984. This table shows that the greatest percentage of video product over the years has come from the US (63 per cent) and the UK (13 per cent), with Australia third at 9 per cent. Compared to the 16-year average, 1999/00 figures show slight increases in the proportion of product from Australia, France and Germany.

These figures cover movies, documentaries, TV series, sports, music, adult videos, health & fitness, etc. They do not necessarily reflect the numbers of VHS tapes and DVDs released, but only show titles submitted to the Classification Board and Classification Review Board (formerly the Office of Film and Literature Classification) for classification. What the figures do reflect is the continuing popularity, in terms of market share, of US, UK and Australian titles.
