Proportion of video stores involved in various retail activities, 1992–2001

Figures for video rental stores between 1992 and 2001 showed the shift in selling activities (as opposed to renting) away from VHS towards DVDs, with 61 per cent of stores selling VHS tapes in 2001, down from 64 per cent in 2000, and 48 per cent of stores selling DVDs in 2001, up from 39 per cent in 2000. Almost all stores rented both formats. The proportion selling merchandise also jumped, from 28 per cent to 41 per cent in 2001.

The industry magazine Video Trader, which was the source of these figures, is no longer published.
