Elsta Foy is the first Indigenous Community Health worker in Western Australia & Nationally. She was the first indigenous health work at the tender age of 16, as a young girl the odds were against her. Indigenous, Female and in the 1950’s. However not much got in her way, she said God has a plan for her so she must help people and that she did. Her life attributes are a phenomenal gift to all past and future Aboriginal people. She is a silent achiever yet so vital to the Indigenous community’s health and wellbeing. She is our Mother Teresa in the Indigenous community. We explore the issues that shaped Elsta and her people being a part of the Stolen Generation, World War 2 and how the Referendum effected her people. We mix big issue stories with personal anecdotes to build a complete picture of life in Broome over the last 80 years.
