The Screen Guide

This half hour program looks at the performance 'Mimi' and the artists behind this inspiring contemporary dance show. 'Mimi' examines the relationship between humans and the spirit world according to Aboriginal culture and lore. Mimi are tall thin spirits, predecessors to humans who dwell in the escarpment in Arnhem land in northern Australia. At night they blow light through the rock face and climb out to sing, dance, paint rock art and make love. They taught the early humans law and duty, or alternately teased and taunted them or trapped them in their spiritual world. These inherited stories, while often simple at first glance, are actually layered with meaning. The 'Mimi' project embraces these stories and brings them to a wider audience in the hope of inspiring their search through the layers of complexities which exist within Indigenous societies of Australia.
