The Screen Guide

This documentary looks at the trend towards hi-tech medicine and specialisation in the USA. The program is centred on Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, one of the world's leading teaching hospitals, which has become a technology battlefield, where patients are regarded only in relationship to the amount of work their treatment will entail. The program presents comments from: trainee doctor Alicia Fry, and teaching hospital expert Dr. Kerr White; and a view of two attempts at humanising medicine, by Reverend Melvyn B. Tuggle of Baltimore, and Diane Becker of Johns Hopkins, who supports Rev. Tuggle's crusade to develop community medical care. The dilemma facing doctors in the hospital's AIDS wards is also examined.
