AUSTRALIAN Content regulation

VIDEO-ON-DEMAND SERVICES

The Government has asked large subscription video-on-demand services operating in Australia to voluntarily report on their level of investment in Australian content to the Australian Communications and Media Authority from 1 January 2021. You can read the announcement here.

The Government is currently consulting on its proposal for a Streaming Services Reporting and Investment Scheme (SSRIS) to incentivise investment in Australian content by large subscription video-on-demand services (SVODs). The proposed SSRIS would be implemented as a two-tier framework, where large SVODs with Australian content spends below 5 per cent of gross revenue would be subject to a formal investment obligation and additional reporting requirements. You can read more about this in the Discussion Paper here.
