Portrait

Irene Zhong

Irene Zhong unearths seldom told stories about us, the world, and what goes on in between. Their delicate, chamber folk sound-world draws on Hakka-Chinese melodies, western art music, and their personal stash of observations too queer for saying aloud in polite company. Having grown up in Australia speaking three languages that weren’t English, concepts such as personal folklore and diaspora are prominent in Irene’s creative practice and activism. Right now, Irene is working on ‘Protest Songs’, a mutual aid initiative fundraising for local social justice causes and endangered communities, supported by Arts Access Victoria’s Accelerate: Nurture grant.
