Maria Tran is a Vietnamese-Australian director, producer, actor, and martial artist with over 15 years of experience in the film industry. She holds a Bachelor of Psychology from Western Sydney University and began her career in community arts and digital media before transitioning into filmmaking. In 2017, she founded Phoenix Eye Films, a female-led production company dedicated to culturally diverse, socially conscious storytelling. Her directorial debut feature, ‘Echo 8’ (2023), won Best Film at the Tokyo Film Awards and Best Feature – Women’s Film at the World Carnival-Singapore Film Festival. Tran has directed a range of projects including short films (’Hit Girls’, ‘Operation Kung Flu’), documentaries (’My Mother, The Action Star’), and digital series. She is a recipient of the Create NSW Western Sydney Fellowship (2018), was named one of the 40 Under 40 Most Influential Asian-Australians (2021), and regularly leads film, acting, and storytelling workshops both nationally and internationally.
