The Screen Guide

Hundreds of Australian women today attend belly-dancing classes, and this program looks at the strange fascination of the exotic dance. Amera, Leonie, Terezka and Bairbre work in the ethnic restaurants of inner Sydney. They have developed belly-dancing as a living, as teachers and performers, and also as a medium for women's self-expression. They talk aboout the difficulties, such as the sleazy cabaret image of the dance, and about the positives, like the sense of achievement and kinship with women.
