The Screen Guide

During World War II, under the White Australia Policy, black American GIs sent to fight in the Pacific were forbidden to be stationed on Australian shores. But as the war in the Pacific escalated it was reluctantly decided to let African American personnel in, as long as they were separated from the rest of the population. Subsequently the Black GIs were stationed in strict segregated zones, where they were subjected to inferior conditions, harsh treatment, racial hatred and even murder.
