The Screen Guide

Charters Towers, in Queensland, is a town literally built on gold. Beneath its streets and buildings is a network of tunnels where gold was mined in one of Australia's richest fields, for 40 years after its discovery in 1871. Above the tunnels, the mine owners and merchants built a city that reflected their wealth - beautiful buildings that could not be matched anywhere in the state. Today, Charters Towers is a living memorial to the great golden days - and there are still those who are mining beneath it, and have never stopped. They believe the great days will come again.
