The Screen Guide

David, a writer researching a book based on his grandfather’s role as a soldier in the German army, interviews Alexandra, a holocaust survivor. Alexandra takes David through some of her family’s experiences during the Nazi holocaust of World War II. Alexandra’s takes David through several events in which she and her brother Peter were hunted by soldiers and the last time she saw her mother alive. Through her stories David learns that his grandfather had once been a friend to Alexandra’s family and failed to help them, leading to the events in which Alexandra would lose everyone she held dear. The narrative is divided between the present and in the past and is bound by a small family airlume, so treasure but Alexandra’s brother Peter. Alexandra tells David her only fear is that any knowledge of the holocaust may fade along with the final survivors. The story of Fading Numbers outlines the effects of actions and inactions and the repercussions of our choices on others. It portrays how loss lasts a lifetime and how hate and anger heal nothing.
